Food
Maine Coons grow for five years. All this time, they increase in size, which means that their nutrition must be balanced and complete to satisfy the high energy needs of the animal. Maine Coons should be fed a diet rich in nutrients and foods high in protein. Typically, they grow to a weight of about nine kilograms. We are often asked questions about Maine Coon nutrition. Experts believe that cats do not need specific food for their breed. In other words, feeding cats is the same, regardless of their breed, even though so many food brands place the label “special Maine Coon food” on their package. Here you need to understand that it is in the marketing interests to sell more and more. However, Maine Coons need a special diet: the excellent food is simple and should meet a high level of dietary needs. We are talking about products with high meat or fish content without grains. When choosing food, you should pay attention to the fact that Maine Coons have a tendency to fatten in the absence of significant physical exertion (especially if the cat lives indoors). A healthy Maine Coon coat requires a lot of protein and fatty acids. Protein must be of animal origin (meat, fish, shellfish). Use of high-quality cat food is allowed. Pates and dry food in supermarkets often contain too little protein (less than 10%). Meat by-products will not save the situation either. Maine Coons require a high protein diet. In addition, the Maine Coon must always have access to water.
In our cattery, we have chosen a species-typical diet, and this is a balanced mix of raw meat. We prepare ourselves and buy only from trusted meat sellers. Our mix is 40% bone component - chicken necks, quail carcasses, rabbits and chickens. 45% meat - beef, turkey, chicken, heart (beef, lamb, pork), 7% kidneys and lungs, 8% liver (beef, lamb, pork). It is imperative that not more than 10% of the mix. Sea fish, eggs and dairy products once a week. If the mix is made correctly, there is no need for vitamins. All vitamins and minerals are included in the mix.
Meat is a source of protein:
- The heart is a source of taurine and calcium. The share of the heart in the total volume of the meat component is 30-40%. The liver is a source of vitamin A and essential amino acids for cats.
- Necks, heads, and wings are excellent sources of calcium and many other valuable substances. Very high in calories. Stomachs, beef tripe, is an excellent source of beneficial intestinal microflora, very useful for digestion (tripe is a very high-calorie and fatty food, given in small quantities).
- Pork nickels, cockscombs, and chicken cartilages are a source of collagen. It is a building block for bones, cartilage and tendons.
- Lung - has no nutritional value, but it is distinguished by a balanced content of calcium and phosphorus and cartilage tissue—just an indispensable product during active growth.
But only as an addition to the main meat menu. The mix is eaten raw and pre-frozen for three days. We have no problems with fur and toilet. I’ll tell you a little secret - the toilet does not smell from natural nutrition. We are thrilled when our kitten owners choose this type of feeding. We help you get it right.
